Diploma Program

Diploma Program

The MET is an IB World School, authorized to offer the International Baccalaureate's (IB) Continuum of programs, including the IB Diploma Program (DP), an academically challenging and balanced program of international education that prepares students for success in university and life beyond.

WHAT IS THE IB DIPLOMA PROGRAM?

The IB Diploma Program is a two year program aimed for students that are 16 to 19 years. Top universities around the world recognize the value of the program and favor IB graduates for admissions.

WHAT IS THE DP CURRICULUM?

The IB curriculum is made up of the Diploma Program core and six subject groups students may study at a higher level (HL) or standard level (SL).

Subject groups

The Diploma Program six subject groups are as follows:

  • Studies in language and literature
  • Language acquisition
  • Individuals and societies
  • Sciences
  • Mathematics
  • The arts

Each group has different courses within. Students must choose one subject from each of groups 1 to 5, thus ensuring breadth of experience in languages, individuals and societies, the experimental sciences and mathematics. The sixth course may be in the arts subject group or the student may opt to take an additional course in the other subject groups instead.

Students must take at least three courses at higher level and the remaining in standard level. These levels differ in scope but are measured with the same grade descriptors. Students at HL are expected to demonstrate understanding, knowledge and skills at a higher level.

DP Core Elements

In addition to the subject groups, the DP has three core requirements that are included to broaden the educational experience and challenge students to apply their knowledge and understanding.

  • The extended essay is a requirement for students to engage in independent research through an in-depth study of a question relating to one of the subjects they are studying.

  • Theory of Knowledge is a course designed to encourage each student to reflect on the nature of knowledge by critically examining different ways of knowing (perception, emotion, language and reason) and different kinds of knowledge (scientific, artistic, mathematical and historical).

  • Creativity, Action, Service requires that students actively learn from the experience of doing real tasks beyond the classroom. Students can combine all three components or do activities related to each one of them separately.

The MET is one of the best IB schools in Panama, authorized to offer the IB Diploma Program.

IB, THE METHOD THAT IS CHANGING THE FACE OF EDUCATION IN THE WORLD IS NOW IN PANAMA

More than 4,000 schools have chosen to teach the International Baccalaureate (IB) programs because of its incomparable academic rigor and its focus on the personal development of its students. IB Schools have, as a whole, more than 70,000 educators that teach over a million students all around the world. Panama is included in this list as the Metropolitan School of Panama (MET) becomes the first school in Central America to receive authorization from the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) authorization to offer its continuum of programs: the Primary Years Program (Preschool-6th Grade), Middle Years Program (7th-10th Grade) and Diploma Program (11th-12th Grade), an authorization that only 284 schools have worldwide.

4TH ANNUAL MET BEACH CLEAN-UP
4TH ANNUAL MET BEACH CLEAN-UP

We are happy to see that this year we collected almost half of what we had in previous years. At the end of the day, we had weighed about 400 kgs worth of trash! Usually, we would expect at least double this weight, but it appears that our efforts are paying off. This was all possible because of our community that has been taking care of the beaches. People are starting to notice how much a little bit of trash can affect our environment.
